Title of Discussion: “DHS Information Sharing Programs”

DHS Speaker: Laura Carlson, Cyber Security Stakeholder Engagement Manager at Department of Homeland Security

Bio: Ms. Laura Carlson serve as the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) principal expert on Office of Cybersecurity and Communications (CS&C) information sharing programs for industry, international, and State Local and Tribal entities. The goal is to reduce our national cybersecurity risk by increasing the usage of CS&C cybersecurity services. CS&C works to prevent or minimize disruptions to critical information infrastructure in order to protect the public, the economy, and government services. CS&C leads efforts to protect the federal “.gov” domain of civilian government networks and to collaborate with the private sector—the “.com” domain—to increase the security of critical networks. In addition, the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC) serves as a 24/7 cyber monitoring, incident response, and management center and as a national point of cyber and communications incident integration.

Ms. Carlson holds a master’s degree in Information Technology from Marymount University and speaks frequently on CS&C offerings at venues/conferences such as: Chemical Sector Cybersecurity Summit, National Guard Cyber Training. Additionally, she served as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Congressional cybersecurity for the State of New York.

Ms. Carlson’s research interests include advancing cybersecurity through automated indicator sharing and building an unclassified national cyber information sharing ecosystem.

Title of Discussion: “Mitigating Standard Threats & Enhancing Threat Intel using Non-Standard Techniques”

CenturyLink Speaker: David Evenden, Cyber Security Exploitation Analyst

Bio: D.L. Evenden is an experienced offensive security operator/analyst with 10 years of active work experience inside the Intelligence Community (IC). During his time inside the IC, he learned Persian Farsi, worked at NSA Red Team and was a member of an elite international team operating in conjunction with coalition forces to aid in the ongoing efforts in the Middle East. While he currently works with an ISP and DHS to aid in the efforts to enhance the bidirectional sharing relationship between the US Government and Commercial entities, his passion is educating network administrators and security engineers on best practices when securing your network.

Third Party / Vendor Risk Management – The Killer Next Door



Speaker: Chad Kennedy, Third Party Risk Management, Optiv


Today, over 50% of breaches come from a third-party. The sheer volume and cost of onsite security risk assessments of third parties and cloud providers is daunting.  With the board, regulators, and threats pushing for results and changes how can you extend your security practices to your third parties? This session details how to establish a third party risk management program which includes a holistic approach which includes policy, leading practices, and incident response techniques.  During this session (the speaker) will discuss what works, what doesn’t, and how to change the paradigm.
