Eastern Carolina InfraGard Chapter Meeting

Wednesday, Apr 18, 2018

Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm

The next InfraGard meeting will be held on Wednesday April 18th, from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at Cisco, 7025 Kit Creek Road, Morrisville, NC 27560 (Building 5).

Gene Shantz with Secureworks will present a case study of a recent intrusion investigation he conducted for a small organization where the attacker gained access to the domain controller and then move laterally through their network. The case study will discuss some of the sterilized details if the incident including the attack vector and how poor visibility into the network hindered the analysis. We will discuss some general proactive procedures that can be easily implemented and help to increase an organization’s overall security posture and reduce their risks from a variety of trending attacks. It’s not if but when the breach will occur, are you ready?

Gene Shantz began his career in computer forensic investigations while working in law enforcement as a
criminal investigator. After serving in law enforcement for 11 plus years, Gene concluded his law
enforcement career as a Detective Sergeant with the Flagstaff Police Department in Arizona. Gene
embarked on his career in incident response in 2013 when he was recruited to join the IBM Incident
Response team where he conducted incident response analysis and managed the network assessment
team. Gene is currently employed with Secureworks as a Senior Incident Response Consultant, working
as the lead consultant on a number of active incident response engagements.
Gene continues to give back to the law enforcement community by serving as the Vice President for the
International Association of Computer Investigative Specialist (IACIS). Gene receive the coveted CFCE
certification through IACIS in 2008 and has served as a volunteer for the organization as a trainer, course
developer, and committee member until his selection to the Board of Directors in 2013.
In his volunteer capacity with IACIS, Gene has instructed law enforcement and the private sector in basic
and advanced computer forensic techniques in the US, Europe and New Zealand.
In addition to training through IACIS, Gene has received training from the US Secret Service, SANS 508
(GCFA), NW3C (National White Collar Crime Center), Guidance Software, ICAC (Internet Crimes Against
